Samsung’s Curved Edge Display Flip Phone Patent
Samsung has filed a patent with CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) for a feature described as a “battery level graphical user interface” on a foldable phone. The images attached to the patent show a flip-style smartphone with a curved frame, and more interestingly, a display built into the frame’s edge. Here are the key takeaways from the patent:

- The edge display is placed on the top frame of the flip phone.
- The display is slightly curved, just like the phone’s edges.
- It is expected to show battery levels at key points like:
- 🔴 10% – Red light
- 🟡 50% – Yellow light
- 🔵 90% – Blue light

This idea brings back memories of Samsung’s older curved edge phones, but in a new foldable form factor. Apart from the curved edge display, the patent also reveals some hardware features:

- Dual speaker vents and a charging port are located at the bottom.
- The cover display spans edge-to-edge, offering a sleek look.
- Dual cameras are placed near the cover screen, similar to the current Galaxy Z Flip phones.
Samsung’s Continued Focus on Foldable Innovation
Samsung has always been among the first to test and launch new features in the foldable market. Just a few weeks ago, the company was seen working on a wearable device with a flexible display, based on another patent.
Samsung is no stranger to foldable experiments. Just recently, the brand was seen working on a wearable with a flexible screen. This new flip phone patent shows how Samsung is pushing to make foldables more useful with smart, integrated features like curved battery status indicators.
With help from our early detection and concept render, we now have a much better understanding of what may be coming next.
What’s Next: Galaxy Unpacked 2025
While it’s not yet confirmed whether this curved edge display will appear in upcoming devices, Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9th may give us a clue. The company is expected to launch:
- Galaxy Z Fold 7
- Galaxy Z Flip 7
- Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE (Fan Edition)
Fans and tech watchers will be looking to see if any of these devices feature this newly patented design.
Whether or not this new design ends up in Samsung’s next foldables, it’s clear the brand is continuing to think outside the box. The idea of adding a functional edge display could bring more visual flair and utility to compact foldables. We’ll know more in the coming weeks, especially during the July 9 launch event.
